Rebuilding a Transmission

Rebuilding a transmission

A transmission rebuild is required for most major transmission problems. Though many transmission problems are minor and don’t require a transmission rebuild. There are a few determining factors, such as the number of parts needing replacing, if the transmission needs to be removed from the vehicle in order to be repaired, etc.

Accessible transmission parts can usually be fixed or replaced while the transmission remains installed in the vehicle. If the transmission part that needs replacing is inaccessible, then the transmission will need to be taken out of the vehicle for a rebuild. Sometime the problem is unidentifiable until the transmission is removed from the vehicle.

Rebuilds are necessary for severely damaged transmissions or unidentified transmission problems. In the case of an unidentified transmission problem, the transmission will need to be removed from the vehicle to individually examine each part, one by one, to discover which parts are the damaged parts. This is a long and intense process. Parts that are in good working condition are cleaned in a unique cleaning solution. Parts that are damaged are replaced. Some parts, like seals and gaskets are always replaced in a transmission rebuild as a standard protocol.
