Reasons for a Failing Torque Convertor

Torque converters have a complex design, but it can experience failure if symptoms go unchecked. The torque converter is a vital part for the function of automatic transmissions. It is what controls the shifting during accelerating and decelerating. Let’s review some of the most common causes for torque converters failure.

4 Common Reasons for Torque Converter Failure

1. Overheating System

Overheating is the is the one of the most common causes for torque converter failure. Transmission fluid is a vital component to keep the transmission and transmission parts cool and lubricated. Heavy towing and system failing results from hot transmissions fluid. If transmission fluid gets too hot, it can no longer properly keep the transmission and its components cool. With no proper lubrication means increased friction, which can put a lot of stress and wear on the parts of the torque converter.

2. Low or Old Transmission Fluid

It is important for transmission fluid to remain clean and at adequate levels. Low transmission fluid means leaking fluid. Transmission fluid can get old and dirty over time from debris and tiny metal shreds, if left unchecked it can severely damage a torque converter. Contaminated transmission fluid can clog small passageways within the system. Transmission fluid maintenance can help to prevent this issue.

3. Defective or Worn Seals

Torque converter seals are responsible for sustaining hydraulic pressure required for function. Worn or damaged seals can cause leaking transmission fluid and ultimately loss of hydraulic pressure. This can cause overheating, poor function, or even torque converter failure. If caught early enough, replacing the torque converter seals would help to prevent further damage.

4. Wear ‘n Tear

Internal torque converter parts, such as bearings, blades, and the clutch can get worn over time. Heavy towing and rough driving conditions causes parts to wear at a faster rate. Regular maintenance is important for the health of the torque converter and transmission. This can help to prevent premature wear and tear.

If you suspect a failing torque converter, don’t delay on getting an inspection. Eagle Transmission Shop in Mesquite offers regular maintenance, torque converter replacements, and transmission repairs.  Serving  all of the Dallas Area including Cedar Hill, Oak Cliff and more.
