Traditional Automatic Transmission vs. CVT Transmission

A CVT is a type of automatic transmission, though they are different than traditional automatic transmissions. Traditional automatic transmissions use gear ratios (low, medium, high) to send power from the engine to wheel and are limited to a 5-range engine gear output. CVT transmissions have no gears since it uses pulleys that are connected to the transmission to control speed and power output. Ultimately, that means that within a maximum and minimum speed range CVT transmissions have an unlimited amount of shift points. 

CVT transmissions are known to be lighter and more fuel-efficient than traditional automatic transmissions. They are preferred for their smoother driving experience and better fuel economy. This makes them a good fit for smaller cars, like sedans and compact cars. Although CVT transmissions are capable of higher performance, they are not typically mounted in large trucks.

The simpler design of CVT allows it to function with fewer moving parts. The difference in design between CVT and traditional automatics causes a different set of requirements for professional transmission technicians. Not all transmission shops work on CVT transmissions. What is a CVT Transmission? 

CVT is short for “Continuously Variable Transmission.” The idea behind the CVT has been around for longer than most people think. In fact, in the year 1490, Leonardo DaVinci designed the first CVT, but it was not patented until 1886. With innovations over the many years, the classic design now offers great efficiency for today’s vehicles.

There are several types of CVTs, though these are the two most common models on the market:

1. Pulley-Based CVT 

This is one of the most common types of CVT transmissions. These CVT transmissions have a complex pulley system instead of gears. It operates with a belt that runs between the two variable pulleys. The two pulleys function by opening and closing to adjust to the correct circumferences, while the belt moves out or in along the pulleys to alter the ratio. This process provides the transmission with a constant range of ratios, which gives a more precise ratio for road conditions and engine RPM.

2. Toroidal CVT

Instead of using pulleys, the toroidal model is powered by a rotating disc and moving rollers to accomplish the same function as a pulley-based CVT. They are not as common as a pulley-based CVT, but they achieve a similar smooth drive and shifting process. Toroidal CVTs are created with the similar continuous gear ratio changes as pulley-based CVTs.
