Signs of Transmission Overheating and What To Do

Over heated transmission fluid

Your vehicle relies on properly functioning systems to keep them running especially your transmission. If your vehicle is running hotter than normal, this could be an indication that your transmission is overheating. When this happens it’s time to consult a transmission expert. Overheating can lead to a serious problem and not fixed promptly will result in an overheating engine or transmission which will be worse in the long run.

What Causes Transmissions to Overheat?

LOW OR DIRTY TRANSMISSION FLUID:

There are several different reasons why your transmission may overheat. The most common reason is due to low transmission fluid. If the fluid is low, this can quickly lead to overheating.  Low transmission fluid can cause the gears to grind and slip resulting in overheating. When this occurs, you may experience difficulty shifting gears. This could be a sign of transmission failure. Your car’s power and gears are controlled by the transmission. Best to get to a transmission expert as soon as possible.  Dirty transmission fluid can also cause overheating and both low and dirty transmission fluid can result in serious transmission repairs.

In order to prevent serious car repairs, it’s a good idea to pay attention to any signs of your vehicle overheating. Make it a priority to check the level of your transmission fluid regularly. If you notice a burning smell from your vehicle, it could be your transmission. As the transmission overheats, it burns the transmission fluid inside resulting in a burned smell. It’s never a good sign when you smell burning from your car.

HOT WEATHER:

Extreme hot weather conditions can cause overheating. The transmission fluid can break down in extreme heat conditions leading to overheating.

STOP-AND GO-TRAFFIC:

Constant stop-and-go traffic can result in the transmission working harder than normal which in return generates heat. This too can lead to overheating.

HAULING HEAVY LOAD:

Additional weight can place a strain on the transmission which can lead to overheating.

Avoid Transmission Failure:

The bottom line is a transmission overheating is not good. The more you drive your car with it overheating the more damage you risk being done to the transmission. Best to not drive it, instead get your car towed to a transmission mechanic. Ignoring the problem can cause serious damage to the transmission.
