Driving Habits that May Effect Transmission Wear

A common cause for abnormal transmission wear is from driving habits. To prolong the life of your transmission, it is important to be aware of your driving habits. Bad driving habits can cause transmissions to wear out sooner than they should. Here are some driving habits to avoid to keep your transmission functioning properly:

Shifting Gears While Car is in Motion

This mainly applies to automatic transmissions. When you shift from reverse to drive (or drive to reverse) while your car is still moving, you are putting extra wear on your transmission. Doing this makes it more difficult for your car to shift gears.

Parking Without Parking Brake On

The parking brake helps take pressure off of your transmission while your car is parked. Your transmission is responsible for keeping your car still when your parking brake is not engaged, so parking brake helps to lift the pressure. This is extremely important when your car is parked on an incline.

Towing Over Recommended Weight

Every car has a recommended maximum weight for towing. Some are more built for towing than others. For the health of your transmission, be sure to follow your car’s recommended weight when towing excess weight. Going over the max weight puts extra stress on your transmission and can cause it to wear out quicker.

Avoiding these driving habits will help keep your transmission from wearing out soon then it should. It is also a good habit to bring your car in for regular maintenance. By being up to date on car maintenance, it can catch issues early or prevent a major transmission problem. If your car is overdue for preventative maintenance, consider getting it checked out soon. Regular maintenance is worth the time!
