If you are not satisfied by Hyundai’s latest eight-speed automatic transmission found on the new Genesis Sedan, you’d better find out that Hyundai-Kia are currently working on a new ten-speed automatic transmission. That’s right folks, a 10-speed automatic transmission could be seen on your Hyundai or Kia by 2014. According to Hyundai Motor Group president Park Seong Hyon who talked with Bloomberg, the new transmission will be used in the Genesis and Equus sedans.

For those who don’t know, the new eight-speed transmission developed in-house by Hyundai made its debut on the 2012 Genesis Sedan and it is used with the 3.8-liter V6 engine, delivering 333 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque. With the help of the new eight-speed transmission, the new car delivers a fuel consumption of 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg, which means an improvement of ½ mpg comparing with the previous model that used a V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

The ten-speed automatic transmission is expected to improve the numbers. What is more interesting is what the competitors will develop, because Lexus was the first automaker to offer an eight-speed automatic transmission of the LS sedan. We do expect Lexus to hurry up things and be the first manufacture to offer a 10-speed automatic transmission in its cars, but Hyundai-Kia might also offer a surprise. Stay tuned!
